St. Louis: Top 5 Trip ideas for Young Couples

May 11, 2016 by Andrea Filed Under: Amanda, English, Places

St. Louis is known as the Gateway to the West, but during our recent trip to the city, we discovered that its also the gateway to a fun-filled weekend for all ages! While this was my first trip visiting St. Louis as part of a “young couple,” I have to mention that I visited this city a lot as a child as I come from a family of Cardinals fans, so this trip was a great opportunity to experience the city from a totally different perspective!

As I was going through the list of possible agenda items, I decided to focus on fun excursions that would be both fun and maybe a tad romantic. So here are Top 5 trip ideas for young couples who are visiting St. Louis.

St. Louis: Top 5 Trip Ideas for Young Couples

  1. St. Louis Cardinals Game: Nothing says romance like a baseball game? Well, maybe a visit to Busch Stadium might not be the coziest of dates, but you can definitely have a one-of-a-kind experience together as a couple if you sign up for their stadium tour! While sharing a beer and a hot dog is a solid “relationship goal” if you ask me, you can impress your significant other even more with the VIP tour that takes you through the most exclusive parts of the stadium including the dug out! We had a blast!                                            Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 9.41.59 PM
  2. The City Museum: Don’t let the word “museum” scare you off, this is a fully interactive experience and great for all ages. Housed in the 600,000 square-foot former International Shoe Company, the museum is an eclectic mixture of children’s playground, funhouse, surrealistic pavilion, and architectural marvel made out of unique, found objects. So take some stretchy pants and sneakers and get ready to crawl, slide and squeeze your way through this museum. TIP: During certain months, they are actually open until midnight on the weekends, which is the ideal time for young couples because the youngsters start going to bed which leaves more fun for the adults to explore. CityMuseumStLouis
  3. Top of the Gateway Arch: Besides get up-close-and-personal when you board the “space pod” contraption that takes you to the top of the arch, this is a breathtaking experience any couple can enjoy. TIP: During the busy seasons, make sure you go online to book your tour in advance, as they do tend to fill up quickly! Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 9.42.50 PM
  4. Budweiser BeerMaster Tour: One of the perks of visiting this city again now that I’m 21+, I can actually enjoy all of the beer that this city has to offer! While St. Louis boasts a variety of breweries, we wanted to visit the King of them all…the Budweiser brewery! We went for the Beer Master tour which was an awesome experience that takes you through every stage of the brewing process, we even got to taste some beer right out of the barrel! Plus, they give you a hat and a nice glass to take home as a souvenir. Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 9.41.50 PM
  5. Sweets at Ted Drewes’: What’s a better way to celebrate your sweet love than with some sweets, right? Ted Drewes’ is THE place to go get frozen custard (don’t mess up and call it ice cream!) in St. Louis and worth every calorie! Tip: The concretes are HUGE! Unless you want to load up on a mass amount of custard, the small is more than enough! Screen Shot 2016-05-11 at 9.42.19 PM

Also, since the number one question I get about my trips are about WHERE to stay, I will mention that we stayed at the Holiday Inn at the Convention Center in downtown St. Louis. We were really impressed by the great service at the hotel and it is also conveniently located just a few blocks from their metro-rail which we used to get around town a bit. They do charge for parking, so keep that in mind as you plan!

Going through all these photos and thinking about all the fun that we had is making me want to plan another trip to St. Louis already! It really is a fun city with tons to offer for every age range, interest, and within all budgets. If you are considering a vacation to this city, make sure you also take advantage of all the great information that Explore St. Louis can offer you, they were a GREAT help as we were planning our adventure!

Safe Travels

Wish we were at… Grenada!

February 17, 2015 by Andrea Filed Under: Andrea, English, Places

Best Caribbean destination: Grenada.

From the Huffington Post.

Grenada is an island country in the Caribbean Sea — its main landmass is also known as “The Spice Island,” and sometimes there’s even a smell of nutmeg in the air.According to a recent KAYAK study, Grenada is also the top trending beach destination in the world.

The best time to head to Grenada is from literally right now until May. It’s currently dry season on the island, which might mean a few more tourists. But then again, you’ve got more than 40 beaches to choose from, with both black and white sand.

Which one is your favorite beach?

10 Things to do in Miami for Valentine’s Day

February 12, 2015 by Andrea Filed Under: Andrea, English, Places

Keep it casual with a the largest South Florida art street festival, or make it classy with a fancy dinner at Turnberry Isle. This Valentine’s, grab your significant other, or a bunch of your significant friends, and celebrate chocolate, friendship and love around our favorite city: Miami.

  1. Get Artsy at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival

What began in 1963 as an intimate “clothes line” art show featuring a handful of artists and a few thousand onlookers as part of a promotion for the Coconut Grove Playhouse’s production of Irma la Douce has transformed itself into South Florida’s most successful arts festival. Today, the event attracts an estimated 120,000 people to the winding streets of Coconut Grove during President’s Day weekend.

2. For Her: Into The Woods

DreamCatcher Theatre’s beautiful new production of INTO THE WOODS takes place in the fairytale kingdom of the Brothers Grimm where, once upon a time, a baker (J.J. Caruncho) and his wife (Arielle Jacobs) were sent on a quest into the woods by a mysterious witch (Tituss Burgess). Thrust into a world of magic and adventure, they find their story intertwined with a group of legendary characters including Cinderella (Annemarie Rosano), Little Red Riding Hood (Magan Dee Yantko), and a certain young man named Jack (Bruno Vida) who has some very magical beans.

3. For Him: Sex and The Animals

Zoo Miami’s Good Will Ambassador Ron Magill will present his critically acclaimed, outrageously funny and incredibly popular program, “Sex & the Animals” in Zoo Miami’s Sami Family Amphitheater. The show will begin at 8:30 p.m., preceded at 7:30 with a wine and cheese reception for general admission ticket holders, or a full catered romantic dinner if you choose the Premium package. Tickets are $35 per person and $30 for Zoo members, which includes the reception. A limited number of Premium packages are available that include a full dinner and dessert bar as well as beer, wine and soft drinks.

  1. For the Fancy Pants: Turnberry Isle Miami

Treat your special someone to an enticing dinner celebration this Valentine’s Day at Turnberry Isle Miami. Bourbon Steak, a Michael Mina restaurant, will offer a contemporary three-course prix fixe dinner, including a take-home gift, a rose for each lady and a complimentary photo booth, for $135 per person, plus tax and service charge. Look at the delicious menu here.

  1. For Cool Groups (friends, girlfriends, recent daters, all the above): The Butchershop

Yes, it really is all of the things in its name with certified prime Angus, hormone-free organic chicken and house-made sausages. You can take it home to cook or have the kitchen take on those duties. The beer garden features an outdoor bar and picnic tables for drinking and eating.

  1. Get Scared: The Flying Trapeze School

If you needed proof he really loved you or she would actually have your back, take a dare and head over to Bayfront Park. We don’t recommend going after a lavish lunch or even a smoothie for breakfast, though. Apparently all the reviewers on Yelp raved about it and could only describe it as “I felt so amazing.” Why in the world you would pay someone to throw you from a really high place is beyond our understanding, but hey, it sounds cool and it’s different. And it makes for great conversation for Mondays. Go. Tell us later.

7. For the Romantic: Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In

Movies under the stars are an American tradition that Blue Starlite Mini Urban Drive-In continues, but it’s changed up the experience a bit. Instead of a huge open field, the drive-in is right in the city and accommodates up to 18 cars per showing, creating cozy outdoor movie watching. Check out the Valentine’s Day specials and buy tickets here.

We saw a lot of benefit to Yahoo Travel’s Top 10 Spots recos for where to go naked. For starters, no stressing out about packing, coordinating outfits, or worrying about getting anything wrinkled.

As it turns out, all you might need is some yourself and some extra SPF. We are bashful Latinas so we are not sure we ran to out notepads to add any of these destinations for our 2015 wanderings. However, it was a great, fun read and it definitively motivates us to get to the gym today.

Why are there so many six-toed cats at Hemingway’s house?

February 4, 2015 by Andrea Filed Under: Andrea, English, Places

Six-toed cats at Hemingway house in Key West, FL. (Via: Yahoo Travel.)

We always wondered about the dozens of six-toed roaming freely around Hemingway’s retreat in Key West, Florida.

“About half of the people who come here come for the cats — not the architecture, not the literature, the cats,” said Dave Gonzales, the house’s curator to Yahoo Travel.

But where did the first six-toed cat come from? Back at the turn of the century, sailors believed that six-toed cats, also called gypsy cats, were good luck, and they wanted them aboard their ships. This led to an abundance of six-toed cats in porttowns like Key West, Fla., in the thirties and forties. Once Hemingway settled in Key West, a captain named Stanley Dexter gave the famous author Snowball, a six-toed cat which was the daughter of his own six-toed cat, Snow White. And, as it does not take two six-toed cats to make another, Hemingway’s iconic state was soon filled with the curious house animalito.
