Voted by Condé Nast as one of the best hotels in Central America and Mexico, the Costa Rica Marriott Hotel San José is a beautiful colonial hacienda set on a 30 acre coffee plantation. The grounds were gorgeous and the perfect background to any vacation. I mean, what’s not to love!? Just look at this photo I took…I could just stare at it all day. But let me break it down for you with the details about the hotel!
When I booked my trip to San José, Costa Rica, I expected to stay in a typical urban hotel in the center of the city…but when I came across this gem in my online searching, I just couldn’t pass up the opportunity! This Marriott might have the capital city in its name, but when you are staying at this resort, you definitely don’t feel like you are in the city! I mean, hello, look at this view!
It is important to note that this hotel has an interesting location if you actually need to get around town. It is just a few minutes (literally) from the airport, but a solid 10-15 minutes into what is considered “downtown San José.” For me, this would be the great place to stay if you are balancing business and pleasure or if you are hosting a get-away-conference with your colleagues.
From the moment that you walk into the hotel, the staff and the ambiance of the entire resort turn your vacation mode “on” in an instance. From the front desk to the restaurant staff, everyone was so very friendly and helpful. Don’t speak Spanish? No problemo! The entire staff is totally bilingual.
I had an especially amazing experience with the staff at the little cafe at the entrance to the hotel, connected to the souvenir shop. It is the perfect place to sit and enjoy some authentic Costa Rican coffee, served to you with big smiles and kind words!
From what I’ve said so far, I bet you can guess what the answer is here. While the restaurants in the hotel are perfect for a date night and a few drinks at the bar, that is about as much “party” as you are going to experience. But who cares, you should get as much sleep as possible so you can get out and about during the day to explore! Even if your agenda is centered around climbing mountains and exploring the rainforest, make sure you also pack your swim suit because there is no way you can resist this double-decker pool that looks out onto the golf course. Because of the awesome pools, this place is very family-friendly…the kiddos won’t want to leave!
The room was pretty much the best you could ask for! The rooms each have tiny little balconies so you can open up the glass doors and enjoy the breeze and the amazing view. Being a Marriott, you know you will have one of the most comfortable beds in the history of all beds (seriously, are they made of clouds?) and here in Costa Rica, it remains true! I did have a little green visitor in my bathroom (a tiny lizard), but hey, that’s what happens when you open the window!
Ok, so I already mentioned one of the “little secrets” of this hotel (the cute little cafe tucked in the corner of their property), but I do want to mention something else that I noticed at check-in. While there might be free wifi in the lobby and surrounding areas, they do charge for the wifi in the rooms. I must admit that when I heard that, I rolled my eyes a bit (don’t you just hate that!) and the staff member quickly told me about the “breakfast package” which for $30/day included the breakfast buffet and also includes in-room wifi! That totally worked for me since I was planning on eating breakfast in the hotel anyway.
